Metrics Versus Categories
Summary: In this article, we will discuss the differences between metrics and categories and how best to use them.
One of the most common questions that come about to the help desk is what the differences are between metrics and categories (Dimensions). I’ll keep this concise and to the point so that you can get started right away with a solid understanding.
Dimensions are known as “Categories” is mostly the format for labeling items in text form. Just think about them as the labels in spreadsheets. You want defined categories/labels to know which metric is related to what. Without that, you would be confused as to how many visits you had on a specific day from a particular URL or how many purchases you had during the month from a specific product. They are the definition portion of the visualization process. They are the particular framework which allows your numbers to be defined.
Metrics are just as they would imply. They refer to the number of occurrences a specific item has and will be converted and or transposed in numerical form. That is why we have the separation of each section appear as they do within the system so that you can have proper labels and numbers within the set system to gain a clear and visual view of the data with easy to read formats. The definition portion with categories and the values area using metrics is what allow you to present a visualized and interpreted data unification which creates your charts, with minimal effort on your end.?
